Todeschini SA Indústria e Comércio of Bento Gonçalves, one of the country’s biggest furniture makers is evaluating a project to set up a new medium density particleboard (MDP) panel plant in Rio Grande do Sul state, according to industry sources.

Todeschini is reported to have already recruited Mario Colombelli, the former industrial director of Brazil’s leading wood panel producer Duratex to advise on its latest project.

Todeschini, which in 2004 established a US$15m 54,000m2 furniture plant in the country’s southernmost state aiming to double its 8,000 piece a year capacity, runs more than 300 exclusive stores across Brazil and in neighbouring countries.

A decade ago, the Brazilian furniture firm had around 11,000ha of its own pine and eucalypt forest plantations in Brazil’s southernmost state.
