Egypt’s National Service Projects Organization (NSPO) has produced the first board at its new facility in the Toshka region for medium-density fibreboard (MDF), made from date palm fronds.
The facility was delivered in collaboration with WESER Industrie- und Anlagentechnik (Weser Wood) of Leer, Germany, the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor MT Mixers of Egypt, and German technology supplier Dieffenbacher.
This new site is designed to convert locally available agricultural residues, namely palm fronds, into high- and MDF products.
The project incorporates a 29MW energy system powered by a solid-fuel steam boiler and a thermal oil heater supplied by Dieffenbacher Energy.
This represents the first use of a Dieffenbacher Energy solution in a wood business unit project since the acquisition of former Bertsch Energy in January 2023.
Dieffenbacher’s teams in Bludenz and Eppingen developed a customised system to use palm waste as fuel.
The plant features a comprehensive range of equipment supplied by Dieffenbacher, supporting all stages of MDF production. This includes a chipper, feeding conveyor, dosing table, rechipper, and systems for chip cleaning, refining, drying, and air grading.
Additional machinery supports glue preparation, forming and pressing lines, as well as board handling, sanding and strapping.
Pneumatic systems and automated electrical controls are designed to enable the efficient processing of large volumes of date-palm fronds.
The development highlights the potential for repurposing agricultural residues and introduces an alternative raw material source for engineered wood products in the region.
