Hot on the heels of the two new 299MW Drax biomass plants, permission has now been granted to Anglesey Aluminium for a similar scale plant in Holyhead.

Collectively, these plants alone could consume the whole of the UK’s forest harvest.

Norbord, along with the wood panel industry in general, has long argued that the justification for the use of biomass for electricity-only generation is profoundly flawed.

This position was given a substantial boost recently in a draft report by the Scientific Committee of the European Union Environment Agency – the EU’s environmental watchdog.

The agency explains that “it is widely assumed that bioenergy is carbon neutral. However, this assumption is flawed.”

In addition, “the potential consequences of this bioenergy accounting error are immense”.
