Sonae Industria (UK) Ltd has had to delay the restart of its Knowsley particleboard production line.

The company, which had originally intended to restart about 80% of production in October following the major fire in June, said the delay was due to unexpected additional damaged electrical areas being uncovered during the demolition stage.

“We are working closely with the main contractor, Barnhill, to ensure production is able to restart as soon as possible, said Nigel Graham, managing director of Sonae Industria (UK) Ltd.

“The start up of the particleboard production will be handled extremely carefully with all the systems tested individually prior to the production ‘switch on’.

“We have continued to source particleboard from within our group to ensure there is absolutely no disruption of supply to our customers.”

Sonae is stockpiling virgin wood fibre in preparation for the restart and it will be talking to its supply chain in the new year about resuming normal intake operations.

The value-added operation is continuing to operate as normal.
