OSB mills are looking to expand production of specialties, reducing their dependence on commodity panels that have hovered near break-even levels for the past four years, according to North American market reporting publication Random Lengths.

Radiant barrier sheathing and premium flooring products are among the most popular. Radiant barrier panels are used to reduce energy costs by blocking heat loss into the attic by means of a foil panel that is laminated to an OSB substrate.

According to Random Lengths, the panel was originally targeted at Texas, but its use has since expanded into other warm weather states.

A wholesaler in the West estimated that 60% of the roof sheathing he sells to customers in California is radiant barrier, and said the state’s efforts to build more energy-efficient homes was helping boost demand.
