The roughly 90 employees at Norbord Industries will have to apply for a limited number of new jobs at the company that just bought the mill if they want to continue working at the site.
New England Wood Pallet bought Norbord, on Laurel Bank Avenue, for an undisclosed amount and the sale is expected on November 5, 2009.
“The high manufacturing costs and declining customer base at Norbord New York has made it impossible for us to continue making MDF profitably without significant capital investments,said Jean Roy, Norbord vice president of northern operations. “We simply can’t justify *the necessary investments in the current economic environment.”
Norbord’s MDF is used in a variety of applications, including as core stock between two sheets of wood veneer to create the appearance of plywood, New England Wood general manager, Charlie Niebling said.
Norbord, which has been operating on a reduced schedule since October, plans to continue operating the mill until next month (November), when New England Wood will begin dismantling the existing factory and adjacent to it build a 30,000ft2 wood pellet manufacturing facility.
