Georgia-Pacific LLC has begun the final construction phase at the nearly complete OSB facility at Clarendon, South Carolina that it acquired from Grant Forest Products Inc last year.
The mill was part of GP’s US$400m acquisition of Grant assets in May 2010 that also included another new OSB mill in Allendale, South Carolina, and a plant at Englehart, Ontario.
“We expect it will take most of this year to complete construction on the plant, said Mark Luetters, president, Georgia-Pacific wood products.
“We are currently planning to start the plant in December 2011. Having now operated an identical plant at Allendale, we believe we will be able to quickly and efficiently begin producing OSB.”
Mr Luetters said GP would spend an additional US$30m to complete the facility. That amount includes the cost of a 100-plus-worker construction crew, and the purchase and installation of the remaining equipment and infrastructure.
