Around 125 registrants from seven countries greeted 23 speakers under sodden skies, interspersed with blue patches revealing Seattle’s bayfringed skyscrapers. The pundits appeared to agree that the worst of the economic conditions had, or soon would, pass.

Opening the symposium at the Maritim Hotel, Hannover airport, Kris Wijnendaele, secretary general of both the European Panel Federation (EPF) and European Federation of the Plywood Industry (FEIC), pointing out that federations can offer little except communication, appealed to a sector of the audience: “Technical people, your challenge is to develop new products and solutions with your customers to create [more] demand”.

APA members congregate in Las Vegas

Some 340 wood panel and other wood manufacturers and suppliers gathered at the annual APA meeting, Las Vegas, Nevada in late September to hear some good news and some bad news. The attendance total was only slightly less than 2007 – somewhat surprising in light of the financial and market conditions.

A lot to learn

The International Wood Composite Symposium seems to have made a permanent move to Seattle, Washington from its long-time home at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. In fact, meeting veterans still refer to it as the 'Pullman meeting'. Attendance stood at 173 and of these, 25% were board manufacturers, 50% suppliers, 20% education and research and 5% associations. Kelly Shotbolt, president and ceo of North America's largest MDF and particleboard producer, keynoted the symposium.

No stress in Stresa

Stresa, on the banks of Lake Maggiore in the Italian Alps, made a spectacularly beautiful and stress-free location for the EPF and FEIC annual meetings. Tearing themselves away from the great outdoors, delegates heard from their two federations about the opportunities and challenges facing their industries.

Llandudno, on the coast of north Wales, once again supplied unseasonably warm, and dry, spring-like weather as over 100 delegates assembled from 28 countries at the North Wales Conference Centre for the three days of the ninth EPPS.

The annual April ‘Pullman Symposium’ drew 200 panel people from 11 countries to Washington State University in early April. Where once particleboard ruled the event, this year’s session centred on the wood-plastic combinations that are drawing so much interest. Powder surface coatings and integral panel colouring also drew attention as well as air quality control.

The European Panel Federation (EPF) and the Fraunhofer Institut for Wood Research (WKI) got together once again to organise their fourth symposium in mid-September at the Maritim Grand Hotel in Hanover. The last event was held on September 12, 2001, the day after the terrorist attacks in the US.
