Volkswagen is to use wood based materials in tools for car production. At the car manufacturer's Wolfsburg plant in Germany, Volkswagen tested five prototypes of a roller conveyor, also called skid conveyors, whose individual modules are made of Wood Veneer Composite (WVC).

Their basic design was developed by the Technical University of Chemnitz (Germany) between 2006 and 2010.

Volkswagen is said to be very satisfied with the low-maintenance, low vibration and noise dampening modules. The car maker now wants to order 75 additional modules.

Skid conveyors are a special construction of the roller conveyor for transporting cars. Promoters say that wood material is much lighter than conventional metal construction, at least as resilient, also low-maintenance, low vibration and noise damping.

The roller conveyor was manufactured from birch plywood, a special wood veneer composite layer.
