  • Everything to play for in a growing market
This year marks the last stage of the latest round of major capacity expansion projects launched by panel manufacturers in Brazil, including that of new MDF player Floraplac. Richard Higgs summarises the overall situation in Brazil today
    Published:  16 November, 2010

Thin board demand – the 21m-long Dieffenbacher press of Eucatex’s new 350,000m3/year thin MDF/HDF line aims to meet high Brazilian demand for thin board from this yearWith two new fibreboard plants – a 350,000m3/year thin MDF/HDF line and a 120,000m3/year standard MDF line – being brought on stream respectively by Eucatex and the newest plywood convert to fibreboard, Floraplac, by this year’s end, annual overall panel capacity in Brazil has swollen to almost 10 million m3.

  • Compomade growing in valuable niche market
Furniture manufacturing in Brazil is recovering strongly, after suffering from the global recession in 2009, with growth of 10% forecast for the full year, reports Richard Higgs
    Published:  16 November, 2010

Compomade’s new general manager, Henrique Zanin, in front of some of the firm’s own wall panels used in its officesThe furniture sector has benefited greatly from a much needed boost this year after the Brazilian government cut the country’s IPI industrial products tax by 5%. Panel producers, too won some relief from a temporary relaxation of the tax.
That stimulus will have come as welcome news to another related, and increasingly important, sector – the wood components industry. This relatively new supply business, providing a wide range of panel based parts and mouldings, has grown up in Brazil within the past five years in response to changes in furniture manufacturing.A view of the entrance to the Compomade wood components plant in Agudos, Brazil

  • Committed to thin panel and to value-adding
The much-heralded launch of Eucatex’s first fibreboard plant in September could not have occurred at a better time as Brazil’s buoyant economy seems set to boom again after the global crisis. Richard Higgs paid them a visit
    Published:  16 November, 2010

A view of the new energy plant of Eucatex’s 350,000m3/year Salto MDF/HDF lineSpecifically targeting powerful demand for thin board in the domestic market, the new 350,000m3/year Dieffenbacher HDF/MDF line, erected at Eucatex’s Salto site, could operate at full capacity as soon as March 2011. While Brazil has plenty of MDF manufacturers turning out board 10mm and thicker, Eucatex is confident its line is the country’s first to be installed specifically for thin fibreboard.
“You do have other lines that make thin board, but not with the same efficiency that our line will have,” declared Eucatex’s ebullient executive vice president Flavio Maluf earlier this year.
In July he told WBPI his thin HDF product would be particularly good quality and high density and that its surface would be substantially better than that of thin MDF board.
“We are very happy, because the Brazilian economy is recovering very sharply this year,” said Mr Maluf.

  • ‘Super-group’ benefits from its synergies
One year on, following the biggest merger in Brazil’s wood panel industry, the partners, Duratex SA and Satipel Industrial Ltda, are already feeling benefits from their surprise union. Richard Higgs interviewed two senior managers
    Published:  16 November, 2010

A view of Duratex’s newly launched 180,000 tonne/year Perstorp resin plant at the group’s Agudos panel manufacturing site in São Paulo stateThe ongoing integration process to form the new group, named Duratex SA, had already ‘captured’ synergies valued at more than US$18.4m by early July 2010. The group says it is targeting eventual savings of some US$54.4m by the year 2016.

  • What really happens in a panel during pressing
    Published:  16 November, 2010

Dr Mark IrleIn the last issue I discussed panel cooling, which raised a few questions about mat temperature during hot pressing and so in this issue I intend to discuss what happens inside the mat during hot pressing.I have already touched on this subject in this column before. Those of you who have carefully kept previous issues can read my views on how steam affects the maximum panel width and density profile of hot-pressed products in WBPI 24(1):60 and 24(2):56.
The core layer of a panel is mainly heated by the penetration of steam generated in the surface layers of the mat. Consequently, the maximum temperature of the core is limited to the steam pressure inside the mat up until the point that the mat is completely dry, then conduction and convection mechanisms can raise the core temperature to that of the platens. Of course, this never happens in a commercial press because the press cycles are too short.

  • Biennial show lived up to modest expectations
The International Woodworking Machinery & Furniture Supply Fair (IWF) took place in Atlanta, US, at the end of August. Mike Botting was among the smaller number of visitors this year, reflecting the poor economic situation
    Published:  16 November, 2010

The Georgia World Congress Centre housed the IWF again this yearIt is not always good to get what you expect, especially when your expectations were low, but the IWF show did meet the expectations of the exhibitors; they expected fewer visitors and that’s what they got.
There were also only two halls this year, compared with three in 2008, and there were quite large empty spaces in those two.
However, most said that the exhibitors were ‘quality contacts’ and that they had been involved in some interesting discussions.

  • The land of opportunity: Wood based panel Markets in South America
The Chile earthquake, Chinese consumption, Argentinian elections: how will these factors affect the Latin American panel markets? Bernard Fuller of Cambridge Forest Products Associates LLC (CFPA) offers some answers
    Published:  16 November, 2010

Global recovery from the depths of the Great Recession has been led by the developing world, particularly China, with full support from other parts of Asia and from South America.
China’s ability to absorb huge quantities of raw materials as it builds a 21st century economy has stimulated demand for foodstuffs, metal ores, chemicals and fuel. Beneficiaries of this economic activity are to be found in disparate places around the globe, from Australian iron ore miners to West African timber producers. Latin America has also enjoyed dining at China’s table, whether the guests have been Chilean copper producers, Argentine soy growers or Brazilian pulp companies.

  • Chilean panel maker is a major force in Brazil
Celulosa Arauco y Constitucion of Chile has grown into a force to be reckoned with in South America’s biggest market, Brazil, and insists there is no way it is going back. Richard Higgs visited Arauco Do Brasil to bring this year’s first report
    Published:  16 November, 2010

Bold acquisition: Arauco bought the Tafisa Brasil MDF and MDP plant at Piên in Brazil’s Paraná state in 2009Arauco do Brasil SA, an MDF and MDP (medium density particleboard) manufacturer with nearly 87,000ha of its own planted forest land and seven wood panel lines at three plants in the country, is optimising its national output and preparing to grow still bigger in Brazil.

  • Europe looking up, North America staying down
John Wadsworth’s company, Intermark, has once again researched the particleboard industry in Europe and North America for 2009 and we present those results here, together with analysis of 2010 and the prospects for the future
    Published:  15 November, 2010

After the very downbeat report on 2008 in last year’s survey (WBPI Issue 5, 2009), our survey of 2009  shows some improvement in demand from the third quarter in Europe and earlier curtailments of production were able to be reversed, while some planned further cuts were avoided.
There was, however, one closure made in 2009 in the EU15 countries. Short-time  orking was commonplace again last year, as manufacturers tried to match supply more closely to demand.
The North American market remains very depressed and figures for housing starts also  continue to make depressing reading, with little hope on the horizon at this time.
